In a donor egg cycle, the egg donor undergoes ovulation induction with follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone to cause the production of several eggs. Like any other IVF patient, egg donors must come to our office for monitoring during the stimulation cycle.

After the eggs are separated from the follicular fluid, they are fertilized with sperm, which can be from the male partner of the egg recipient or from a sperm donor. In most cases, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is employed to inject the sperm directly into the egg.
After 3-6 days of in vitro development, embryos are transferred to the recipient’s uterus. The recipient has undergone hormonal therapy to synchronize her cycle with the donor’s so that her endometrium is ready to accept the developing embryo.
Alternatively, embryos can be frozen and stored until the recipient (mother) is ready for implantation.
On the day of donor egg retrieval, the recipient’s partner will provide a semen sample that is processed and used to fertilize the donor eggs. After 24 hours, the eggs that are fertilized will show so-called pronuclei. The embryos will remain in culture and will continue to grow for another 5-6 days before they are transferred to the recipient.
It is our practice not to transfer more than two embryos. This keeps the rate of twins at about 25%. In rare cases, we may recommend transferring more than two embryos. Excess embryos that are suitable for transfer will be cryopreserved for future use.
